Workplace EAP Services

Taking performance to another level by understanding limits

Everyone Has Limits

Working conditions and environment can have a huge impact on mental health and, equally, someone’s mental health can have a significant impact on their ability to perform well in their job.
Employers have a legal duty to take reasonable care of the health and safety of employees, both physically and mentally.

Given that it is predicted that the effects of the pandemic and associated changes in working arrangements is likely to increase the incidence of mental health issues and demands for NHS resources, which already have long waiting lists, EAP provision crucially offers easier access for employees to mental health support, when and how it’s needed and at an earlier stage.

The Statistics

Annual statistics published by The Health and Safety Executive in November 2020 suggest that stress, anxiety and depression accounts for 51% of all work-related ill health and 55% of working days lost (17.9 million days) which is increasing each year. Their findings suggest that the effects of the pandemic were not yet reflected in the figures. According to the National Institute for Health & Care Excellence (NICE), it costs businesses in the region of £24 billion a year.

Employer Responsibility

Given the ongoing challenges faced by the pandemic, paying attention to mental health has never been more important. Employers are required to develop and maintain comprehensive risk assessment and wellbeing policies for their employees. Engaging independent, specialist and confidential mental health resources are therefore essential and valuable assets to your business to help you to meet your legal requirements and employer responsibilities.

Understanding EAPs

What is an EAP?
The first employee assistance programmes (EAPs) were established in the 1940’s in response to the growing problem of alcoholism among white-collar workers. They have evolved into a voluntary, employer sponsored programmes that offer confidential assessments, short-term counselling, referrals and work/life services to employees who have work or personal related problems that affect their work performance.
What are the benefits of using an EAP?
An effective EAP plays a critical role in motivating and supporting employees in their personal wellness and in building resilience to stress before it leads to health or productivity issues. By continually focusing on, and adapting to an organisation's needs, the right EAP can:
• Improve employee health and well-being
• Improve company productivity and performance
• Reduce missed work days
• Increase employee recruitment and retention
What kind of issues can be addressed?
EAPs address a broad and complex array of issues affecting mental and emotional well-being, both workplace related and personal. EAPs also work in a consultative role with business managers to address employee and organisational challenges and needs. Best practice dictates that EAPs should be part of a larger company plan to promote wellness that involves written policies, taking action to prevent stress and manager and employee training.
How much does an EAP cost
All EAPs have different pricing policies. At Mindwell Matters, we do not charge an annual fee or per employee. We only charge for the services delivered by us when they are used.
What Makes an EAP successful?
• Open to all employees on a confidential basis.
• Recognition, commitment and support by management, employees and trade unions with education, promotion and encouragement to use the service.
• Establishment of both formal and informal referral procedures.
• Periodic monitoring and evaluation of the EAP to ensure:
-the needs of both the employee and the employer are being met
-continued quality of the referral/support
-potential issues are identified and addressed
